Against Me!

Against Me! are such a hard band to write about for me because they are so err.. complex? But I can’t decide if can go see them on their upcoming tour in May so I thought writing a blog about them would help make up my mind. I’m currently listening to their discography in chronological order and it’s really interesting to hear them progress from their ‘folk punk’ roots into the polished rock band they are these days. It’s weird that I had never heard of them until they were on Fat Wreck Chords (a relatively large label) and that I still always thought of them as quite a small band. They used to play basements and small clubs (like every other band I guess ) and now they are playing The Forum (best venue in town)! They used to be anarchists but now they are sell outs but the weirdest part is that they are still pretty great.

Their debut, Reinventing Axl Rose is a classic underground punk album and means so much to a lot of people but as they progressed they lost a lot of their ideals (and old fans), but I guess that’s growing up. Listening to their latest album and major label debut New Wave they sound completely different but they also manage to sound like themselves just with fucking Butch Vig doing such a bland job on the production. I feel like I’m rambling a bit here, so I’ll just post some mp3s in chronological order if you want to have a a listen. (The best one is the first one… actually no! I can’t decide)

Against Me! – Pints of Guiness Make You Strong – Reinventing Axl Rose (2002)
Against Me! – Sink, Florida, Sink – As The Eternal Cowboy (2003)
Against Me! – Miami – Searching for a Former Clarity (2005)
Against Me! – Thrash Unreal – New Wave (2007)

One of my good friends used to be a MASSIVE Aginst Me! fan. Absolutely obsessed.

    …Then they released New Wave.

Well New Wave is actually pretty good if you give it a chance and ignore the sell outness of it.

Its funny how when people try to feed their families… they’re coined ‘sell out’.

Think back to this blog when you’re 29… when you’re struggling to pay your bills, and you have no extra cash… you’ll WISH you could “sell out”.

You little pricks will understand one day.
