First Impressions of Eighty Percent of Weezer’s New Album
So yeah the eight of ten tracks leaked from Weezer’s new album and I have to say; holy shit yes! I don’t really know what to think. Is the whole thing a joke or are the lyrics serious? A commercial rock album that makes fun of commercial rock albums? Whatever it is, I really like it and it kicks the shit out of ‘Make Believe’. Instead of just Rivers singing all of the time the guys switch it up a bit and all have a turn at lead vocals and while some of it doesn’t really sound that much like Weezer it’s good that they tried something different without sounding shit; for the most part.
‘The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn)’ sounds like something a first year drama student/part time gospel singer would write if they had been listening to a whole lot of Queen and Weezer records, it’s funny, long, melodic, has a spoken word part and is pretty great. A few of the songs sound very RnB influenced but really I need to listen to the whole album to make up my mind about this, but for now the novelty hasn’t worn off and I am loving the shit out of this.
I’ve been a long-time Weezer fan and I have only been disappointed since the Green Album (Rick Ocasek, where art thou?), but I have found that “Greatest” actually makes for a listenable Weezer song if started at the 2:15 mark:

Even Sugar Ray wrote a better “fake” Weezer song than this new material:

Cheers on the blog.
