The Mars Volta @ The Forum (Melbourne) 24/06/08

June 25, 2008

The Forum was looking in fine form, the dark blue roof and ancient Greek setting, bizarrely appropriate for the bands historical and mythological aesthetic, suiting the giant stage backdrops of brightly colour artwork and eccentric light show.
Each almost orchestral arrangement blended into the other, the set only consisting of seven or so songs, stretched to their limit with endless jams testing the capability of each of the eight musicians present on the stage. Leaving many ears ringing was the strong, booming drums at the hands of Thomas Pridgen, and Bixler-Zavalar’s vocals emotive soundscapes on their own, but only to then add to the tangled hectic mess of guitar, drums, saxophone and keys.
In the three hours they played, not only were the lines between the songs blurred, but also the lines between genres as their music eclipsed any one-word descriptions. On the keyboard Isaiah “Ikey” Owens created large dance melodies as Rodriguez-Lopez and Adrián Terrazas-González on the bongos worked together to create the Latino beat, a staple to The Mars Voltas music, all presented with a full on punk enthusiasm most ‘punk’ bands today would never even come close to replicating.
While the band has always been, and will always be Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López, The Mars Volta has never appeared to be such a tight-knit band than ever before, and with it being the second of two Melbourne shows, I can’t imagine that this set was any less energetic than what it was the night before.
I love this band, and under the work ‘musician’ in the dictionary is no definition, just a photograph of Omar and Cedric but, a three hour long set of non-stop noise is enough to make any hardened concert-goer completely exhausted, and at the two hour mark, many in the audience had hit the proverbial wall, though all were determined to stick it out, because it’s almost impossible to draw your eyes away from the erratic ‘bedlam’ (see what I did there, hey???) that is being played out before you!

I find this band sort of boring on record to be honest but they are pretty damn awesome live. Jealous.

I remember being obsessed with this band once upon a time.

    Still am a bit obsessed.

I completely agree with what you have said here. COMPLETELY. Especially about the 3 hour set being tiring. About 2 hours in I was like ‘OK….wait, no, they’re still going’ but I was determined to harden up and stick it out. But I think the fact that they can actually PLAY for 3 whole hours is really a testament to their talent.
