Against Me! – The Acoustic EP (2001)

July 28, 2008

I have all whole backlog of new albums I should be giving a listen but I haven’t really been in the mood to listen to new music lately and have been putting some time into (re) appreciating some stuff I already own. I’ve been a big fan of Against Me! for awhile now but always kind of skipped over this EP somehow which is surprising because after recently giving it a better go I discovered it’s really great.

Coming out before their epic debut Reinventing Axel Rose (2002); The Acoustic EP (well it’s really only a self titled EP, but whatever, that’s really confusing) is a collection of acoustic songs (wow really?!) that truly embody the sound of what would later become the full band of Against Me!. Tom Gabel sounds earnest as he sings punk folk songs about the punk scene, anarchy, politics and more. It’s also cool to hear acoustic versions of full band songs that appear on their debut album, in particular the rousing version of ‘Pints Of Guinness Make You Strong’.

The song writing is top notch; equal parts catchy, honest but deceptivly straightforwad. To hear these humble beginings after listening to their Butch ‘I’m gonna make everything loud!!!’ Vig slickly produced New Wave (2007) it’s nice to see how the band has progressed musically but still mananged to retain parts of what made them so appealing even if some fans would beg to differ. If you’ve never listened to Against Me! this is a great place to start, just don’t get turned off/confused by the opening track…
