Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (2008)

November 13, 2008

During the writer’s strike in the USA, Joss Whedon (you know it’s gonna be good!) got together some people, including family members and previous actors he’d worked with, and made a short, three-episode series called Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. And, well, it’s pretty much exactly how it looks – a video blog with lots of singing, told from the point of view of the ‘bad guy’ (Dr Horrible). It stars the likes of Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible, Nathan Fillion (Firefly!) as his nemesis, Captain Hammer, and Felicia Day (Buffy) as the romantic interest, Penny.
Each episode is about fifteen minutes long, and they go together to form a hilarious but tragic story. Act 1 is my favourite, if only because it has more comedy and less tragedy, with the introduction of Captain Hammer on the courier van being particularly enjoyable. As you get through the episodes, they get progressively darker, and by the end I was quite upset, but I guess that’s what happens when the protaganist is a villain.
Of course, you can download the whole thing via BitTorrent, but for those of you who have iPods, I highly recommend downloading it from iTunes – it’s only $6 for the entire series, part of which will go to support Joss and co., of course.
Final verdict: By far the greatest supervillain musical mini-series ever to grace the Internet.

I agree immensely – really enjoyed this. Fantastically produced, especially for an independent film. I thought the lighting and camera work was superb, and the music is awesome (despite the occasionally karaoke-sounding backing instruments)

Definitely plonk your $6 down – Joss is hoping that with revenue from sales he’ll be able to pay his crew and cast (most of whom did their work for little or no pay)

The ending did leave a bittersweet taste for me as well initially, but I did come to appreciate it after a while …

hahaha! I just watched the first episode of this, pretty great. Awesome cast and music. Joss Whedon is the probably only person who can make me enjoy a musical…
