Belle and Sebastian – The BBC Sessions (2008)

December 5, 2008

I mentioned a while back that my favourite Scottish indie-poppers were releasing a new compilation album of BBC recording sessions, and I got hold of the vinyl release the other day. Sadly, the vinyl doesn’t come with the bonus disc of a live set in Belfast (not even as a free download), so I downloaded it (come on, I paid a fortune for the vinyl as it was…) and have been listening to it since.
Strangely enough, and despite the whole lot being pretty A.M.A.Z.I.N.G., I think I’m more of a fan of the bonus disc more than the main one. I mean, the only real plus to the first disc, besides some pretty okay previously unreleased tracks, is that some of the recordings are better than the originals, especially those from If You’re Feeling Sinister, which was pretty badly recorded for the album release. So yeah, very nice, but nothing terribly new and exciting.
The live bonus disc, however, is of a set that included a lot of covers, including The Beatles’ Here Comes the Sun, Thin Lizzie’s The Boys are Back in Town, and one from the Velvet Underground. Those excellent covers (seriously, they are amazing), combined with a wonderful rendition of The Wrong Girl (from Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant), among others, makes it one of the best B&S collections I’ve ever heard.
I just wish the entire lot was on vinyl.
