Nick’s Favourite Things of 2008

December 21, 2008
by

Because I haven’t really be listening to anything new the past couple weeks (besides maybe Fall Out Boy) or doing much at all (besides getting rained on and starting work) I decided I would just do another sort of list post. It follows below.

Favourite Festival ween3
Golden Plains
I probably would have picked Meredith if not for the muddy weather and the fact I missed some bands I was hanging out for but Golden Plains was pretty perfect and hard to compete with. Ween playing a two hour set was amazing and the rest of the line-up was not far behind with great sets by Beirut, Jens Lekman, Future of the Left and more. The next one is only three months away too!

sufjan_stevens
Favourite Show
Sufjan Stevens @ The Forum – 16-01-08
Not only was this my first and only time seeing Sufjan it was also my first time at The Forum (best venue ever) so that just made the show all the more better. The crowd’s stunned reaction was a highlight while Sufjan and his band sounded wonderful and played a fantastic set. A terrific atmosphere from a fantastic performer.

Favourite Film WALL-Eposter
Wall-E
I was expecting this movie to be pretty good as robots are awesome and Pixar rarely stuffs anything up but I didn’t expect it to be the amazing film it was. The animation was incredible and the simple relationship between Eve and Wall-E was lovely. Wall-E is also funny, breathtaking and all round stunning. People saying it is just for kids couldn’t be more wrong.

Generation_kill_hboFavourite TV Series
Generation Kill
Generation Kill is a mini series based on a book detailing the first few weeks of the Iraq invasion written by a Rolling Stone reporter back in 2004. The characters are all interesting, the action is fantastic and impact it has is surprising. Watching these characters make tough decisions and struggling to deal is riveting, while watching others make cold blooded ones without a second thought can be disturbing. HBO really can’t do anything wrong (besides Sex and the City) and I almost put their True Blood series here instead but it just didn’t have the same impact on me.

Favourite Ongoing Comic Book SeriesWalkingdead1
The Walking Dead
While zombies are awesome in many ways they merely provide the background for this incredible series by Robert Kirkman, instead it is more of a character study while we watch this band of survivors deal such terrible events. The writing in this series never dips, the characters never act unrealistically even though they might surprise you and with the constant threat of Zombies you never know who might die; Kirkman has no fear killing off his characters either which makes this all the more gripping. The black and white art is also fantastic and conveys the desolate landscape well while managing to capture the characters emotions deftly. Part way into 2008 saw this series take a slightly new direction with a mostly new cast of characters and it feels just as fresh as ever.

grand salvoFavourite Album that wasn’t in my Top 10 List
Grand Salvo – Death
I probably should have put this in my top 10 but I didn’t realise how much I liked it until after seeing them live at Meredith. The children’s book vibe, the brilliant vocals and lyrics all combine to make this a fantastic album. The contrast between minimal classical guitar and then full blown strings is also wonderful and I really hope this album gets some more attention in the coming months.
