Dent May – The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele (2009)

Sometimes an album comes along that you can’t stop playing. I have been playing this in my room, at work and especially in my car over the last few days (and also my voice has been singing it in the shower) and it is just lovely, fun and insanely catchy. Think Jens Lekman with a Ukulele and perhaps a bit of Beirut’s vocals stlyings thrown in plus some clever self-aware lyrics and exceptionally well written pop songs.

Dent May has a smooth crooning voice and he has a knack for creating catchy vocal hooks, sweet melodies and lovely harmonies. His Ukulele is complimented at times with Hawaiian sounding guitar, upright bass, doo-wop backing vocals and simple beats. It opens with a Dent musically welcoming us to ‘”his record” before launching into the groovy “Meet Me In The Garden” where May switches between soft crooning and falsetto vocals playing up his romantic side which is fairly prominent on the record. “College Town Boy” tells of a boy who plays “guitar alone and drunk on his bed” and who regrets “never studying abroad”, if you weren’t paying attention you’d swear it was a happy song with its sweet melodies but listen closer and you might get a little bit sad. Possibly.

Album highlight is “You Can’t Force a Dance Party” in which Dent tries to throw a party for his friend Sally but “Michael’s far too drunk, he’s watching Youtube videos” and Dent “is in the corner reading poetry and prose”. One of the catchiest and best choruses I’ve heard in a long time and it’s almost a shame it barely stretches past two minutes. “At The Academic Conference” again displays Dent’s humour and wit, lamenting over a girl he saw standing next too “an ordinary PowerPoint slide” over a slow groove with big melodies while poking fun at academics and himself.

This is an album made for Summer, while their are moments of lyrical sadness it is truly a fun goodtime sort of album with a wit and charm that is very rare. Dent May is not afraid to show us he can be a boring, romantic or nostalgic guy and also I don’t think he could write an unhappy song. Even when he is singing about being an alcoholic he doesn’t seem too upset. I really hope this guy get’s some accolades in 2009.
