Marina Topley-Bird @ Bosco Theatre 25/1/09 (Sydney Festival)

January 30, 2009

Another little gig as part of The Sydney Festival. This time in The Bosco Theatre, which for those not in the know is a mini Spiegeltent with harder seats and floor reminiscent of a community hall. This theatre showcased the occasional show through the few weeks (including Kristin Hersch from The Throwing Muses doing spoken word). The special night tonight though was the special voice of Martina Topley-Bird.

As described by James, this was one of those secret shows being held as part of the festival which you could only know about via SMS or by heading to the festival website. I was actually quite shocked to see Martina was playing as I had no idea was even in the country let alone on the Big Day Out tour (even though there’s really no indication of her performing on the line up).

For some reason I sat down and waited, then waited for quite a bit more, and then Martina came out to cheers to the tightly packed small Bosco Theatre. I have to say, this girl has pizzaz and quite a wide scope of taste. Tonight, she was only armed with a Phodes and a piano as opposed to the beats of her album (which isn’t released here yet and is called The Blue God). She started off with “Golden Brown” by The Stranglers and then after a few more keyboard based songs moved onto some acapella with the audience. It was more or less forced upon her due to some issues with her loop pedals.

The set really flew by and I just wanted more and more! Reggie Watts came on out for a few tracks and gave his brilliant human made beats under Martina’s whirly scatting. She also showed some brilliant free styling, unaccompanied vocal skills as well in her encore which just took me to a semi high place. It was complex and intertwining between a R & B and cabaret style voice, which made it sound really fresh. I didn’t know much of Martina’s work, but I sure will try to explore more of her work now.

I just realised what a beautiful dress she is wearing. Also, she has gloves! Woo!
