Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation! (2008)

February 18, 2009

Not Quite Hollywood is a documentary on Australian film, but not the sappy, shite, ‘please nominate us for an Oscar’ kind of Australian film. It’s about Ozploitation. It’s about sex and nudey scenes and drugs. It’s about hotted up cars being demolished within seconds and utes being blown up in the middle of the Australia’s red centre, and about how nature can fuck you over in the form of a giant crocodile, wild pig-hog-thing or some bizarre human-marsupial hybrid. This about when Australian film makers didn’t give a fuck about what was happening in America, didn’t care about awards and film festivals but about trying to get the greatest shock value to their film, and getting the greatest laughs. It was sarcastic and satirical and about encapsulating what other countries thought of us and throwing it back in their faces!
What I love is the passion in which Quentin Tarantino speaks of Australian genre cinema, and how it has in tune influenced films of his own.
I can’t help but watch the film and feel proud of these naff, gorey and, well pretty shitty films that this documentary holds so dear!
This is a MUST SEE!
