Critics corner it ain’t

April 10, 2009

I very much love Melbourne. A lot of the time, I actually wish I was just tele-ported over there along with my job, life, friends etc etc. But alas it ain’t so and I have to do with the oh so cosmo surrounds of Sydney for most of my life. Which isn’t bad in itself mind you – it’s just that there is only so much oochie coochie posh bars I can stand. Besides, in all honesty, Melbourne’s creative instincts and vibrancy for culture, performance and music is just so superior to Sydney’s. A friend of mine the other day mentioned that the community ethos regarding those scenes is just so stronger than up here for no reason other than the enthusiasm that people have for going out. It seems so appealing to me to just up and leave here.

The over ending point of this post though is to point out that I’ve discovered something to add to the ever expanding list of awesome that Melbourne can have attributed to it. I was listening to 3RRR up here in Sydney via their stream where I had heard Clem Bastow mention her new show, focusing on the music criticism and words written about those sounds. I followed the link and just have been hooked ever since! Their first little segment delved into a really funny conversation analysing Axl Rose’s steadfast refusal to bring the original line up of Guns N’ Roses back together. The episode also featured an awesomely informative interview with local music writer and editor Adam Curley where a “deep” discussion of Fall Out Boy’s live performance ensues. I now know that flashing guitars are now back in fashion – maybe. I’m fairly eager to watch Ep 3 where they discuss music journalism online…. I’ll have the notepad out for that one

As well as Clem, the show features other regular Melbourne writers Mia Timpano and Tim Finney (from Inpress and featured in the above poster) who both bring fresh points of view across in the lively discussions on the show. Dancing About Architecture can be seen on Channel 31 in Melbourne on a Monday night @ 9:30. I, and everyone else around the country will have to contend with watching it online – do the clickity click thang below.
