The Ruby Suns
Ryan McPhun has been producing sweet tropical pop sounds with a rotating cast for years now with The Ruby Suns over in New Zealand. Towing the line between glittering 80s soundscapes and all out dance tracks, all with fun-as-hell tropical vibe. Tracks from the new album Flight Softly, sound less live than previous work and more based around creating the best vibes possible with a laptop.
McPhun (surely this isn’t his real name right?), plays with synths to create some of his most accessible and danceable work yet. “Haunted House” works with a stop start rhythm that sounds like everything including the kitchen sink. Part mechanical and part Caribbean, it’s a great less-than-3-minute pop song. “Cranberry” has a shifting prolonged African inspired intro before slipping into glitzy stabbing synths and falsettos. This is some of McPhuns most accomplished work and I hope he brings the band back to Australia sometime soon.
I did some session trumpet for ryan’s first album and have been friends/ in bands with him and his li’l chief labelmates the brunettes and the tokey tones for years now, and I can assure you that Mcphun is actually his real name. He’s a lovely man, too.
